The Frequently Answered

--------------------Icon Related Questions

Do you take special requests?
On a general basis, I don't take special requests unless I know you personally. However, every once in a while, I may open up requests for a short period of time as a way of thanks for friending this place. :) When that time comes, I will make a post especially for requests. In the meantime, you can suggest subjects for me to icon at the suggestion box. I generally refer to that list a lot when I think about what I should icon next...so if you leave a comment there, I'd probably eventually get around to it. :)

Can you edit one of your icons for me?
As long as the request is reasonable and that I still have the original PSD file available, then yes feel free to ask for an edit. The best time to request would be within a week that I've posted the batch since it's more likely than not that I've still got the original file available for editing. As a side note, I do not do edits to add a personal LJ username on them. The icons are made available for everyone and I don't think it's fair to edit one just for private use.

Can I edit your icons?
No. You may not, under any circumstances, edit any of my icons. The only exception would be in the event where I offer bases and clearly state that you can edit it to your liking. Otherwise, please leave the icons be and ask me to edit them if you need it done.

How do I credit when taking your icons?
Generally when taking an icon, I ask that you credit in your keywords at the userpics when you upload the icon rather than at your userinfo page or a journal entry unless you've displayed the icon along with the credit. Here's an excellent and simple tutorial written by [info]perceptible on how to give credit through keywords.

Can I use your icons outside of LiveJournal?
As long as you credit my icon journal at http://www.livejournal.com/users/colorfilter/, then all is fine and dandy. Use it anywhere you want. :)

I have a fansite for _______. Can I host your icons there for offer?
I would like that you please ask first- though in most cases, I should say yes unless your site contains questionable content. I also ask that you upload them on to your own server and credit my icon journal when putting them on your fansite. And of course, thanks for your interest. :)

May I nominate your icon(s) at an icon award community?
Sure, I would be honored! I only ask that you let me know when you do and where you've nominated it at as I'd love to go take a look. Another thing is, I'd prefer it if you upload it on to your own server rather than direct link. This place eats up my bandwidth like crazy. :p

What font did you use for the script text at the Harry Potter batch on 06/08/2005?
The script you see on icons 1-24 of this batch is actually not a font. Those scribbles were handwritten by me and my fingers. :)

Where did you get so and so pictures for your icons?
If you don't see a credit for images at the said icon post, then please always check my resources post, as that's where I always have everything credited.

--------------------Resources Related Questions

How do I use one of your textures? Do you have tutorials?
Most of my textures work best if used as layers and adjusting the blending options accordingly. I have some tutorials on them and I also keep a running tab on tutorials I've come across that has used my textures. All tutorials can be accessed through this journal's memory archives here. Up near the top of the list, you should find tutorial sections for you to browse.

How do I credit you for your textures?
A credit link to this journal at your userinfo page or your resources page (if you have one) will be sufficient. Crediting at your specific icon posts would be so greatly appreciated though not an absolute requirement. If you prefer, I have linking buttons located at the bottom of my info page that you can use as well. :)

Can I use your textures/brushes to make my own textures to offer?
For brushes or general color/light textures, it's fine if you want to make texture bases with them- but crediting is an absolute must...and preferably at the same post as where you offer your textures for download. As for my plain texture sets and my texture bases like those seen here, I'd really prefer it if you don't edit them to re-offer for download. Those are almost like a design of their own, and I spent a lot of time on them- it just doesn't feel right for someone to take them for editing and then recycling it to offer to the public once more. I see it like someone taking an icon to edit the text or color and then repost it as their own. I hope that with this comparison, you will understand my reasons a little better. :p

How do you make your textures? Can you teach me?
^^; The truth is- I use many different techniques for most of my textures, and I play around with layer blending options, filters, brushes, etc. etc. that it's difficult for me to say right off the bat how they're done in general. Each of my batches are done differently, and I honestly don't even remember the exact steps I've taken to make a texture since I do a lot of merging and steps. :\ I've been meaning to write a tutorial on this...so when I do, I'll be sure to post a link here since it seems I get this question really often. ^^; In the meantime, take a look at [info]icon_tutorial...I'm pretty sure I've seen several texture tutorials there before.

I've downloaded your textures/bases. How do I upload them on to PS/PSP, etc?
Textures and bases that come in image packs do not have to be uploaded to your program. They're basically used as layers...so they're compatible with everything and you can use them with virtually anything. :)

--------------------General Journal or Miscellaneous Technical Questions

I've friended you. Why didn't you friend me back?
For a while, this seemed to be a big problem for some people and I'm very sorry about that. First off, I greatly appreciate everyone who has friended this journal and it makes me very happy that you guys like the stuff you see here enough to friend me. There are several reasons why I don't generally friend people back- I made a post about it but in brief- first, there's an LJ limit of 750 people that a personal journal can friend and since I've already surpassed that amount on those who have listed me as a friend, it isn't fair if I can't friend everyone...so instead, I choose to friend none. Second of all, as of 08/22/2005, I've set up a special thing for those who have supported this site where I offer extra graphics to show my appreciation. Because of that, I need to have them friended so that they can view my "exclusive" entries that are protected. Everything else is all public, so please do not fear about me not friending you back. :p It isn't personal!

I've commented on your journal. Why didn't you reply?
This is really due to several reasons. First of all, sometimes there isn't much to say but a simple "thank you" and I always thought people might get exasperated about receiving email notifications of just that. :p And another reason is basically because the amount of comments I get in a post is generally a good and quick reference for me to see at a glance what my visitors like or dislike most. So I try not to tamper with it too much. ^^; However, I do always try to reply to comments that contain questions, suggestions, requests, constructive comments/criticisms, etc. I'd also like to add that I really love and appreciate each and every comment that has been left though. It honestly motivates me to do more for this journal- and it's because of you guys that I continue to post all the goodies...so big thanks to you all! :)

What programs do you use to make your icons/textures/graphics, etc?
I used to use Adobe Photoshop 6.0 and now I've upgraded to Photoshop CS for general icon making and Adobe Image Ready for animated sections. On occasions, I might use Adobe Illustrator if there's something I need to do that PS doesn't have a function for but Illustrator does. All graphics constructed on a Mac computer, in case you're curious. ;p

How did you make the table with the different background colors in your icon posts?
They're really done the same way you would create an HTML table. If you have absolutely no idea at all how HTML tables are coded, here's a simple tutorial I wrote a long time ago on it. Hope that helps!

I don't know where to upload your stuff. Can I just direct link?
Under no circumstances may you ever direct link or hotlink to the stuff I put up at this journal. I use up a lot of bandwidth every month and I already have trouble paying for them as it is. There are plenty of free image hosting sites out there that you can try. The most popular one is Photobucket. Give them a try. It's free and easy to use!

Why have I been banned from your journal?
If you discovered that you've been banned from my journal, this is most likely because you've broken some major rule I've set out to enforce around here. For example, hotlinking. I always know who's hotlinking because I have a tracker on my server. If you're found to hotlink to anything here, you will be banned. Another reason would be if you've stolen my resources and offered them elsewhere or claim them as yours. I'm very against someone taking my work and claiming it as their own. Please respect the graphics I post here. Thank you.

I noticed that you have some protected entries for certain downloads. Why can't I view them?
As of 08/22/2005, I've started to offer special downloads for those who have helped the site out by donating in some form or the other (usually paypal donations or paid LJ months). For more information, please refer to this post. Basically, to show my appreciation for those who helped out- I had decided to offer some special downloads like large textures or extra graphics and resources for them. These people are the only ones who will be able to view the protected entries.

--------------------Donators and Exclusive Downloads Questions

Can I crop your large textures to use with icons?
Sure! The large textures are put up for you to use with anything. They're made large for your convenience so that you can use them with larger projects, but you're welcome to crop them according to your needs. :)

Can I write tutorials using these textures since they're supposed to be private?
While the textures I put up at the exclusive section shouldn't publicized be anywhere else, you're welcome to write tutorials using the textures if you like. That's completely okay! :) Please just remember to still credit me though. ^^;

Can I use your large textures to make my own textures to offer?
While I want to say yes to this, I'd be much more comfortable if it's given on a case-by-case basis. I'll most likely say okay...but I can also imagine that there might be some large textures that I'm more protective over. All I ask is that you ask me first...and then we can talk about it more in detail. :)

--------------------

And that's all for now. More will be added as needed. If you have any questions that hasn't been covered, feel free to ask here. Thank you.

I have a quick question. I'm currently working on an icon set for a friend, using your textures (which are great, btw. Thanks!). How would you prefer that we handle giving you credit? I can put a note in my userinfo, but I won't actually have the icons on my account. Would you rather I request she put a note in her userinfo?

Thanks!

Wow..hmm...this question has never come up before. ^^; I would be very grateful if your friend adds a note about it in her userinfo, but it's fine otherwise as well. It's not an issue if she doesn't add the credit, so I'll leave the decision up to you both. Thank you very much for asking though- I really appreciate it! :)

Err..actually, this question doesn't have anything to do with your textures or anything, but I really love the general layout of your journal. I'd be really grateful if you could share the overrides code with me - of course I won't use your header and I'll definitely credit you.

If not, I'd understand, of course. ^^

Hmm...the layout of my journal doesn't use overrides though. I'm using an S2 layout while utilizing CSS coding to customize some stuff- but even that, it's pretty simple and similar to the basic coding that was originally given with the layout though. Maybe you could try looking at the layout style under S2 and see if it already fits what you wanted to do?

I have to say how awesome the design of your journal is, I love it! How do you do it? You said your account isn't paid, but you've still got all the stuff paid accounts get... How did you do it like that? I can't work it out...
Thanks,
Happachiru

Ah...let me rephrase that...how did you get your OWN journal design, rather than one of the presets? I've got the S2 layout, but how do you utilize CSS coding to customize the journal?

That's what I meant...ha.
