Challenge! Color Textures Fun
This is something I've been wanting to do for a while now and I really hope many of you will decide to join in. There are tons of icon challenges out there but never really any resource challenges after all. So I hereby present you...

Color Textures Fun!

The challenge, if you choose to participate, is to make a set of "color" themed textures and go wild with them. Since this is the first time I'm doing this, I thought we'd start with an easy theme (can you tell I plan to do more of this if it's successful?).

Here's how it goes:
  1. Pick a color. Make a set of at least 10 different textures with shades/tones of that color, but the more the merrier of course. You can make the textures in any way you want, as long as it's predominantly in the color you chose. Be creative and go nuts! BUT you must make them... don't just scan something then crop it and call it a texture. (Minimum texture size: 100x100 - you can go larger if you like)

  2. Once finished, upload your set, post them, and comment on this post with a link to your textures (include your journal's name, your color, and the amount of textures in your set).

  3. There will be no claims. Anyone is free to pick a color of their liking, and all skill levels are welcome as well... so for all those who don't usually make textures, now's your chance to give it a try! You can also participate in as many colors as you like, but each of your set must be different and not just a variation in color from each other.

  4. Challenge will end in 2 weeks on Tuesday, July 3rd EXTENDED to Friday, July 6th at 11pm unless there's a need for an extension, in which case, I'll post about it. I will then put together a list of all the textures sorted by color for everyone to look at, enjoy, use, etc. I'm hoping it'll be a useful resource reference as well. :)

All comments will be screened by default first to keep the submissions under wraps until the "texture reveals" at the end.

EDIT 06/22/2007 - Submission Process: A few of you brought up some questions and good points on submission, so I thought I'd set up a more specific guideline for the submission process:
  1. Post the individual textures you made in your journal like you would a set of icons. You can also offer a link to your zipped pack if you like, but it'd be nice to have individual textures laid out for this challenge so everyone can browse and see what you did (which is the point) rather than having only the preview to look at.

  2. Reply to this post with a link to the post with said textures, along with your journal name and number of textures (and/or sets) you made for the challenge.

  3. I'll make a master list of links to all the submissions, sorted by color and likely with one or two samples of your textures to go along with it. This way, the post can serve as a showcase and also as a useful reference post for those wanting to look for textures in a specific color. Because of that, please make sure this particular post of yours isn't friends/members-locked.

To Note: Due to the nature of our challenge, please try to refrain from cross-posting your textures post until after the end of the challenge. It defeats the whole purpose of a "reveal" if your entry has already been seen by thousands of others in communities and such. Likewise, it'd be great if you could wait until the last 2 days of deadline to actually post your textures even if you've finished them earlier (in order to minimize exposure)... but that's just an idea. I don't want to make things more complicated by forcing submission dates on anyone (at least not for this challenge). Another idea is to "backdate" your entry first so that it's at least partially hidden, and then after the reveal, you can change the date so that it'll show up on your friends' list, etc.

Let me know if you guys still have any questions.

Please pimp this post far and wide! :D

ETA 07/07/07: Challenge is now over. Check out the awesome entries HERE!

This sounds fun, I haven't made textures in a while. I'll probably give it a shot :)

I've never really made much as far as textures, however I think I might take a stab at this. =)

Oh, double the fun I think! I was hoping that those who don't normally make resources would give it a go as well. :)

Hell, I'll do it. I've never made textures, but I think I could do it. :)

I think....crap, I don't even know what color I wanna do! There's so many possibilities! Hehe...do you need to know what color up front or when we post our stuff?

Yay for giving it a try even though you've never made textures. :D I hope you'll have fun with it!

As for the colors... I don't need to know the color up front (unless you want to tell me), since I don't want anyone to feel "tied down" to their color in case they get a sudden case of inspiration while making the textures. :)

I'm so glad you're taking a stab at this even though you've never made textures before- it's all the more fun I think! :) As for the size, they don't absolutely have to be 100x100 but I think that should be the minimum size.

I'm currently in school but reading this now, I am so excited!! I am a complete n00b on making textures but I'm going to join. ♥ I do have a question! Will it be fine if I submit it under [info]ice_cubed? 'cause that's my graphic journal!

Are we talking tile-able textures, here, or icons?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]colorfilter
2007-06-19 07:01 am UTC (link)
By "tile-able", do you mean seamlessly when tiled? If so, then no (unless you want to) as we're not making patterns for the challenge. They shouldn't be icons like what we have for userpics though.

That's such a fantastic idea! Yay for some originality.

I really can't participate, as I'm horrible at making textures and such(owed largely the the crap-ness of my program), but all the best in getting it off the ground.

xXx

Glad you think so! I was worried for a bit, thinking no one would want to join in. But aww, you shouldn't let your program stop you from doing this. If you change your mind... well, we'd love to see another set. ;)

Wee! I look forward to them! :)

As for the size, there are no specifications to that... though I would say a minimum of 100x100. You can go larger but not smaller.

[info]thirteenreasons
2007-06-19 07:41 am UTC (link)
This is probably a stupid question, but can we use brushes made by other resource makers to create textures for this challenge? I've only made 3 or 4 textures ever, and without using brushes they're pretty craptastic.

What a fun and original idea, though!

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]colorfilter
2007-06-19 01:19 pm UTC (link)
Generally, I'd say no since most brush makers don't tend to allow others to use them to make their own resources. However, if you've obtained permission, then I suppose I have no reasons to disallow it. :) Then when posting your entry, please state and link to the resources you've used on your post. I hope that's reasonable!

And I'm glad you think it's a fun idea- I hope to see you participating!

wah! I wanna join! sounds like fun! XD

but I never made a texture before. :3
about the colors, is it in gradient? can you explain more? sorry, I'm so clueless. @_@

I'm glad you're not letting the "never made them before" issue stop you! :D I hope you'll have lots of fun with it. :)

And by colors, I don't mean gradients since those aren't the same thing as textures. I meant that once you've picked a color, ALL the textures in your set must be in that color/shade/tone. For example, if I pick red... then I could choose to submit a set like this one (not the greatest example since it's a rather boring set). Does that make more sense? Basically, whatever style or type of texture you decide to make, all of them must consist of mostly the color you picked.

Let me know if you have more questions! :)

this sounds like an interesting challenge.... I've never made sets of textures before....and I do plan on entering to give it a try.

question? do you want each individual texture uploaded seperately for the challenge rather then a zip file....to make it easier for you to post them. and if thats so... do you want the image and the url? just as its done in icon challenges.

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]colorfilter

I think never having made them before just makes it all that more fun, so I hope you'll end up enjoying this. :)

As for your question... hmm, I'm going to have to think about this a bit and get back to you again. I had a plan for this, but now that I'm considering it more, it seems kind of flawed. I'll append this post with details on posting soon. Thanks for bringing it up!

Oh my gosh - you are alive!! :-)

Snagged recent goodies and how lovely to see you back.... :-)
This is a great idea and were I not so busy I'd have a go.

Did you get the Dec PayPal payment OK? Never heard from you that you had and you had just vanished.... the website is still up and running and I've not managed to ruin your hard work... yet

Eee! Yes, I'm alive (barely kicking my sore feet, but alive nonetheless). It's definitely good to be posting again, even if it won't be as often as I used to. :p

Aw, it's too bad you won't be able to participate. Maybe next time? If this one goes well, I'll be holding another challenge in the future... perhaps with a tutorial and workshop attached. We'll see. :)

And about the payment, yes, I did get it and I wrote back to your email too! It was one of the few emails I made a point to reply to (I was traveling a lot at the time and didn't get much internet access). Did you not receive any email from me? :( I thanked you profusely, that much I did remember, especially for your bonus... because that was just wow!! *mega-hugs* And I'm glad to hear that your website is still up and coming along well. :D Of course, do let me know if you ever need any help!

Other than that, I hope you yourself have been doing well too?
